Answer

Let a⃗ = 2î − 3ĵ + 4k̂ and b⃗ = −4î + 6ĵ − 8k̂. Then b⃗ = −2a⃗. Since b⃗ = λa⃗ with λ = −2, the vectors are collinear (parallel). ✓

Q12

Find the direction cosines of the vector î + 2ĵ + 3k̂.

Answer

Magnitude = √(1+4+9) = √14. Direction cosines: l = 1/√14, m = 2/√14, n = 3/√14

Answer

c⃗ = (î+ĵ+k̂) − a⃗ − b⃗ = (î+ĵ+k̂) − (î−ĵ+k̂) − (2î−ĵ+2k̂) = −2î+3ĵ−2k̂.
⇒ c⃗ = −2î+3ĵ−2k̂

Q12

If a⃗, b⃗, c⃗ are mutually perpendicular unit vectors, show that a⃗+b⃗+c⃗ cannot equal zero unless each is zero.

Answer

If a⃗+b⃗+c⃗ = 0⃗, then |a⃗+b⃗+c⃗|² = |a⃗|²+|b⃗|²+|c⃗|²+2(a⃗·b⃗+b⃗·c⃗+c⃗·a⃗) = 1+1+1+0 = 3 ≠ 0. Contradiction. ✓

Q13

If the vertices of triangle are A(1,1,2), B(2,3,5), C(1,5,5), find the interior angle at vertex B.

Answer

BA⃗ = −î−2ĵ−3k̂, BC⃗ = −î+2ĵ. BA⃗·BC⃗ = 1−4+0 = −3. |BA⃗| = √14, |BC⃗| = √5.

cos B = −3/√70 → B = cos⁻¹(−3/√70)

Q14

Find the sine of the angle between a⃗ = 3î+ĵ+2k̂ and b⃗ = 2î−2ĵ+4k̂.

Answer

a⃗×b⃗ = |î ĵ k̂; 3 1 2; 2 −2 4| = î(4+4)−ĵ(12−4)+k̂(−6−2) = 8î−8ĵ−8k̂.

|a⃗×b⃗| = 8√3. |a⃗| = √14, |b⃗| = √24 = 2√6. sin θ = 8√3/(√14·2√6) = 8√3/(2√84) = 8√3/(4√21) = 2√3/√21 = 2/√7.

→ sin θ = 2/√7

MCQ: Area of rectangle whose adjacent sides are a⃗ = î+2k̂ and b⃗ = î+2ĵ+k̂:

Answer

Area = |a⃗×b⃗|. a⃗×b⃗ = |î ĵ k̂; 1 0 2; 1 2 1| = î(0−4)−ĵ(1−2)+k̂(2−0) = −4î+ĵ+2k̂.

|a⃗×b⃗| = √(16+1+4) = √21. Answer: (C) √21

Q19

MCQ: If θ is angle between unit vectors a⃗ and b⃗, |a⃗−b⃗| = sin(θ/2). True/False?

Answer

|a⃗−b⃗|² = 1+1−2cos θ = 2(1−cos θ) = 4sin²(θ/2)
⇒ |a⃗−b⃗| = 2sin(θ/2) ≠ sin(θ/2). False; the correct value is 2sin(θ/2).

Important Extra Questions

Q1

If a⃗ = î+ĵ, b⃗ = ĵ+k̂, find a vector coplanar with a⃗ and b⃗ that is also perpendicular to b⃗.

Answer

Let d⃗ = αa⃗ + βb⃗ = α(î+ĵ) + β(ĵ+k̂) = αî + (α+β)ĵ + βk̂.

For d⃗·b⃗ = 0: d⃗·(ĵ+k̂) = (α+β)+β = α+2β = 0
⇒ α = −2β.

Take β = 1: α = −2. d⃗ = −2î + (−2+1)ĵ + k̂ = −2î − ĵ + k̂

Q2

Find a unit vector perpendicular to the plane of the triangle with vertices A(1,−1,2), B(2,0,−1), C(0,2,1).

Answer

AB⃗ = î+ĵ−3k̂, AC⃗ = −î+3ĵ−k̂.

AB⃗×AC⃗ = |î ĵ k̂; 1 1 −3; −1 3 −1| = î(−1+9)−ĵ(−1−3)+k̂(3+1) = 8î+4ĵ+4k̂ = 4(2î+ĵ+k̂).

|8î+4ĵ+4k̂| = 4√6. Unit vector = (2î+ĵ+k̂)/√6

Q3

For three vectors a⃗, b⃗, c⃗ prove that a⃗·(b⃗×c⃗) = (a⃗×b⃗)·c⃗ (scalar triple product).

Answer

Let a⃗ = (a₁,a₂,a₃), b⃗ = (b₁,b₂,b₃), c⃗ = (c₁,c₂,c₃). Then b⃗×c⃗ has components (b₂c₃−b₃c₂, b₃c₁−b₁c₃, b₁c₂−b₂c₁). a⃗·(b⃗×c⃗) = a₁(b₂c₃−b₃c₂)+a₂(b₃c₁−b₁c₃)+a₃(b₁c₂−b₂c₁) = det[a⃗ b⃗ c⃗]. Similarly (a⃗×b⃗)·c⃗ = same determinant. ✓

Q4

If |a⃗+b⃗| = |a⃗−b⃗|, show that a⃗ ⊥ b⃗.

Answer

|a⃗+b⃗|² = |a⃗−b⃗|²
⇒ |a⃗|²+2a⃗·b⃗+|b⃗|² = |a⃗|²−2a⃗·b⃗+|b⃗|²
⇒ 4a⃗·b⃗ = 0
⇒ a⃗·b⃗ = 0
⇒ a⃗ ⊥ b⃗. ✓

Q5

The position vectors of A and B are a⃗ = 2î−ĵ+k̂ and b⃗ = î+ĵ−k̂ respectively. Find the position vector of the point C that divides AB externally in the ratio 1:2.

Answer

External division (1:2): OC⃗ = (1·b⃗ − 2·a⃗)/(1−2) = (b⃗ − 2a⃗)/(−1) = 2a⃗ − b⃗.

= 2(2î−ĵ+k̂) − (î+ĵ−k̂) = (4−1)î + (−2−1)ĵ + (2+1)k̂ = 3î − 3ĵ + 3k̂
