NCERT Solutions for Class 10 Mathematics Chapter 5: Arithmetic Progressions

Arithmetic Progressions covers the fundamental concepts of sequences where each term is obtained by adding a constant difference to the preceding term. This chapter explains how to identify an AP, determine its first term and common difference, and apply formulas to find the nth term and the sum of the first n terms. It equips students with the mathematical tools to analyze numerical patterns and solve practical, real-world problems.

Answer

aₙ = 3 + 4n. a₁ = 7, a₂ = 11, a₃ = 15. d = 4 (constant)

S₁₅ = 15/2(a₁ + a₁₅) = 15/2(7 + 63) = 15/2 × 70 = 525

Important Extra Questions

Q1

The sum of the first n terms of an AP is given by Sₙ = 3n² + 5n. Find the AP and its 25th term.

Answer

S₁ = a₁ = 3 + 5 = 8. S₂ = 12 + 10 = 22
⇒ a₂ = 22 – 8 = 14. d = 14 – 8 = 6.

AP: 8, 14, 20, 26...

a₂₅ = 8 + 24(6) = 152

Q2

How many terms of the AP 24, 21, 18... must be taken so that their sum is 78?

Answer

Sₙ = n/2[2(24) + (n–1)(–3)] = n/2[48 – 3n + 3] = n/2[51 – 3n] = 78

n(51 – 3n) = 156
⇒ 3n² – 51n + 156 = 0
⇒ n² – 17n + 52 = 0
⇒ (n–4)(n–13) = 0

n = 4 or n = 13 (both valid — the AP has negative terms after the 9th, so partial sums can repeat)

Q3

Find the sum of all two-digit numbers divisible by 7.

Answer

AP: 14, 21, 28..., 98. a = 14, d = 7, l = 98. n = (98–14)/7 + 1 = 13.

S = 13/2(14 + 98) = 13/2 × 112 = 728
